Every second of May, the district of Móstoles (Madrid) is transported back to the early 19th century to commemorate the uprising against Napoleon Bonaparte and his army. It is officially a Festival of National Interest for Tourism.
This fiesta commemorates the famous declaration of war by the Mayors Andrés Torrejón and Simón Hernández on 2nd May 1808, which started the Peninsular War (1808-1814). During the festivities, around 300 locals, members of associations and clubs kitted out in period costumes act out these historic events that were so decisive for Spanish history, and the streets of Móstoles look like a scene from a Goya etching. As well as these recreations, which are the central event of the fiestas, there is plenty more happening over the week, from concerts to workshops, sporting tournaments, activities for children, music in the street and food tastings,
