Easter Week in Ocaña

Festivity of National Tourist Interest
Toledo

Ocaña, in the province of Toledo, has been holding Easter processions through its streets for 400 years. Its processions are notable for their silence and sobriety, and for their colour. Especially noteworthy is the Good Friday procession with its jointed, moveable figures.

Easter week is one of the most heartfelt and deep-rooted fiestas celebrated in Spain. Its history and tradition go back many centuries, and commemorate the passion and death of Jesus Christ. Most of the cities, towns and villages of Spain are transformed into scenes of religious fervour and devotion, combining grief and meditation as the faithful contemplate the Passion, with music, art and colour creating a magical atmosphere in solemn processions in which throngs of people accompany the religious images.
