On 29 June, San Pedro’s Day, the Riojan town of Haro holds an interesting festival: the Wine Battle.
This tradition dates back to a possible legal dispute with the nearby town of Miranda de Ebro over the ownership of some cliffs. After a mass, this peaceful battle starts with both sides throwing litres of wine at each other non-stop. It’s an impressive spectacle that ends at midday. Then, the people return to Haro and gather in Plaza de la Paz square.
