The Portugalete and Basque Country International Folk Festival, organised by the Elai Alai Basque cultural society and folk group, takes place every year at the end of July.
Eight or nine groups from different countries take part every year. The event is centred around the town of Portugalete, the venue for the first four days of the festival. The first three days’ events take place in the Zubi Alde sports centre, while the fourth day is held outdoors with all the groups playing simultaneously on six different stages located at different points along one of the town's main avenues. The other days the groups perform in towns and villages throughout the Basque Country. The festival also includes exhibitions and concerts featuring the instrumental components of the invited groups.
