Very special summer nights in Spain

Summer nights in Spain are perfect for enjoying the outdoors. The temperatures are outdoor-friendly, and a lot of original entertainment is on offer in Spain during these months.

  • NIGHTS OF ENCHANTMENT

These are nights where you can enjoy flamenco shows in unique settings. They can be experienced especially in Andalusia over the summer. For example, the Festival of Granada takes place in June and July at such special sites as the Alhambra, Seville holds shows in the gardens of the Real Alcázar Palace, and some of the concerts in the Cordoba Guitar Festival are held in the Orange Tree Courtyard of the Great Mosque.

  • NIGHTS IN THE ROMAN EMPIRE

    Mérida Classical Theatre Festival

Mérida is the place to go, as its International Classical Theatre Festival takes place between July and August. The main stage is the city's Roman theatre, which is over 2000 years old. In addition, you can visit temples and monuments that have been conserved since Mérida's time of splendour during the Roman era.

  • MUSICAL NIGHTS IN A CAVE

The settings are Cova d'en Xoroi (Balearic Islands), and Cueva de los Jameos del Agua, Lanzarote (Canary Islands). Nights on the former are legendary, especially during summer when you can also enjoy live music at this exclusive location with sea views. Cueva de los Jameos is a lava tube transformed into an enchanting space by artist César Manrique, blending architecture and nature. Concerts and DJ sets are held here.

  • CULTURAL NIGHTS UNDER THE MOON

These are guided night-time tours of emblematic monuments and cities. Perhaps Granada's Alhambra and the Great Mosque of Cordoba are the most attractive, because you can explore the sites without the crowds, which are hard to avoid in the daytime. Nevertheless, there are guided night-time tours in almost all of Spain's tourist cities during the summer. In some cases, there are also dramatised tours.

  • NIGHTS OF PURIFYING FIRE

On June 23, the shortest night of the year, Spain celebrates the Bonfires of San Juan fiesta. During this night, it is traditional to make small bonfires and jump over them at dawn. Why? As the legend goes, the fire purifies the soul of those who jump over it. The fiesta is celebrated in many cities and beaches. The bonfires of Alicante and A Coruña are recognised as Fiestas of International Tourist Interest.

  • CANDLELIGHT NIGHTS

In Vejer de la Frontera (Cádiz) and Pedraza (Segovia), you can spend a magical summer night by candlelight. Vejer de la Frontera is one of Cadiz’s famous white villages, and for one night, usually in June, its old town centre is lit by candlelight. For its part, Pedraza is completely lit up by thousands of candles on the first and second Saturdays of July. In both places, live music accompanies the candlelight night.

  • NIGHTS FULL OF LIGHT

The New Cathedral of Salamanca lit up during the Light and Avant-garde Arts festival

Each June, Salamanca holds the Light and Avant-garde Arts festival, lighting up many of its World Heritage monuments. Buildings are transformed into screens and visual effects and light shows are projected onto them. For one weekend in September, Toledo’s historic buildings become the canvas for light creations based on paintings by El Greco. This is the “Lux Greco” festival.

  • NIGHTS UNDER THE STARS

Did you know that Spain is renowned for its clear skies which are perfect for stargazing? Some of the Starlight Reserves are in the Balearic Islands, Aragon, Catalonia, Andalusia and the Canary Islands. You can join nature expeditions to see the stars, visit observatories or spend the night in accommodation especially designed to enjoy the night sky.
