A route in the Neila Lakes

Discover one of the most beautiful, spectacular places in the province of Burgos, in northern Spain: the Neila Lakes. Lofty peaks and pine forests surround this huge nature area, where water collects in glacially-formed lakes. Don't think twice - come and visit. You are sure to be pleasantly surprised.

The Neila Lakes form one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Burgos mountains, with a wealth of rivers, waterfalls and pine forests. The route running through this area attracts thousands of walkers every year. Get your hiking boots on and get ready to live an unforgettable day's walking. This area is on the border of the provinces of Burgos, Soria and La Rioja. Access is easy: if you are coming by car, which the best way to get here, just follow the road that runs between the villages of Quintanar de la Sierra and Neila and, once you get to the Collado pass, take the signposted track that leads directly to the lakes. Enjoy the rugged, wild mountain scenery, which is of great ecological interest on account of the flora and fauna to be found here.

Once you get to a parking area you should leave you car. Now the excursion really begins. It is a simple route, ideal for all the family. A fairly easy walk takes you to the lakes, which appear one after the other. After about an hour, the cold, dark, mysterious waters of the Black Lake (Laguna Negra) appear, set in a broad meadow. This is the most famous of the lakes. Come and admire this glacial cirque, the largest and most perfectly formed in the Ibérico mountain range.

In winter, the area takes on Christmas card beauty: frozen waterfalls, the snow-capped mountains reflected in the lake, trees covered by fresh, white flakes... Make sure you wrap up warm with suitable clothing. And here is a tip: if you like climbing, make sure you bring your crampons to climb the frozen waterfalls.

While you are here you can climb La Campiña, the highest peak in the area, over 2,000 metres above sea level. It offers stunning views of this enchanting region. If you want to spend the night, don't worry - there are several mountain huts in excellent condition, open all year round.

On your way back, visit the village of Neila. See its stately houses and the cave which is home to the source of the Neila River - a great spot for potholing enthusiasts. Have a good trip!
