The Rias Baixas on a tour of its Paradors

  • x

The Rias Baixas is a wonderful corner of Galicia and a unique way of exploring it is to travel around its Parador Hotels. An opportunity to visit stunning islands, watch colonies of sea birds, explore the culture of the sea, fishing and shell fishing, and enjoy water sports, visits to wineries and much, more more, while staying in castles and unique buildings. Come and follow us on this unforgettable route.

Savour the delights of the Rias Baixas in Pontevedra staying in the Parador hotels of this delightful corner of northern Spain. A good place to start is Cambados, situated on the Arousa Estuary, right on the Atlantic Ocean. The town's Parador Hotel is a traditional 17th-century Galician manor house situated right in the centre of what is the capital of the Albariño (a very smooth white wine) wine-making region. Pay a visit to the local wineries and cross the estuary to relax in the famous spa waters of the island of La Toja. The parador also offers organised trips to some of the small islands in the estuary as well as activities connected to fishing and seafood, the main highlight of Galician cuisine, although not the only one, as you will discover on this trip.

Take the coast road south and within half an hour you will come to Sanxenxo and Portonovo, two sizeable holiday resorts. You can take a boat from both ports to the Ons Islands, which form part of the Islas Atlanticas National Park: a virtually untouched paradise that is ideal for watching the local bird populations. If you prefer sailing, catamaran sailing or water skiing, then the Rías Baixas Marine Resort is the place for you.

Just 20 kilometres away, in the centre of Pontevedra, stands a 16th-century Renaissance palace now converted into a Parador. Horse riding routes, whitewater rafting, 4x4 routes and golf are just some of the activities laid on in the local area. Travel across the Vigo Estuary and you'll come to Bayona, about 60 kilometres away. The town's Parador is a spectacular walled medieval fortress that overlooks the Atlantic. Lovers of underwater fishing, hang gliding, paragliding and windsurfing will find everything they need to pursue their favourite sport.

What better way to end your trip by stopping off in the town of Tui, whose Parador is a country mansion overlooking the River Miño and the border with Portugal? Take a trip along the Miño in a kayak or boat, travel down its rapids and enjoy the views from Mount Aloya, a nearby nature reserve. So why not join us on this exciting route?
