Catalonia on horseback

Hold the reigns tight and get ready for fun. Riding is a sport that allows you to explore the wide variety of landscapes to be found in Catalonia. In this part of northeastern Spain there are mountains, volcanoes, valleys, beaches... Discovering them on horseback is a real adventure.

Enjoying the countryside and feeling one with nature is a sensation you can experience on horseback. If this sounds appealing, then there are a host of options in Spain, with riding activities available in many parts of the country. Catalonia is one of these. The Region is situated on the Mediterranean coast, with amazing landscapes, away from the crowds. Come and enjoy a horse riding route with family or friends, and you will discover an original, fun way to spend your holidays.

Galloping riders

There are many companies, schools and horse riding centres in Catalonia, so it is easy to organise a riding holiday. Options go from short rides lasting a few hours, to one-day outings and even week-long programmes. You will not have to worry about a thing, as the companies take care of everything you need: equipment, accommodation, guide/instructor and, of course, the horse. Usually, before starting the ride, you will be shown how the horses are prepared, and given tips about how to treat and look after them. As far as clothing is concerned, you should take comfortable garments, jodhpurs or baggy trousers without seams on the inside, hiking boots and helmet.

You will find activities suitable for expert riders and beginners alike. Nevertheless, according to the level of difficulty and characteristics of the terrain, you will sometimes need riding experience. This is why many centres also offer classes for beginners and more advanced riders. Once you are ready, it is time to ride. Throughout the route, your guide will show you the best places to gallop or where it is better to trot.

Not to be missed

You will find horse riding routes throughout Catalonia. In the province of Tarragona, for example, leaving from Poblet Monastery, an architectural site with the UNESCO World Heritage designation, you can explore forests, vineyards and mountains in the Poblet nature area, or you can follow the Císter Route that runs to Santes Creus and Vallbona de les Monges.

In the province of Barcelona, it is well worth discovering the lunar landscapes of the Garraf Mountains on horseback, along with the luxuriant vegetation of the Montseny Nature Reserve, a designated Biosphere Reserve, and the Bons Homes Trail, an old route used between the 12th and 14th centuries. In the province of Girona, meanwhile, don't miss the route that runs over mountains and through medieval villages, between the volcanoes of the Garrotxa Nature Reserve and the beaches of the village of Pals, on the Costa Brava. In the Pyrenees Mountains, Lleida province, there are also horse riding routes in the Val d’Aran and the Alt Urgell regions. The Voltors Valley route and the Romanesque art to be discovered in the Ripollés region are other options.

These are just a few of the options for riding holidays available in Catalonia. The best thing is to contact the tourist offices in each region, where they will give you information on all the available options and the horse riding centres you should use. Riding brings together nature, sport and enjoyment. What more could you ask for?
