The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum presents this special exhibition with works from its collection by some of the most important women artists of the Russian avant-garde.
The Russian avant-garde was an unprecedented cultural Renaissance in early 20th-century Russia. This movement, which combined the influence of foreign artistic trends with authentically Russian aspects of culture was characterised by its many important and innovative women artists, setting it apart from the other movements of the period. Some of the most outstanding women artists of this Russian avant-garde are shown in this exhibition, with a selection of 12 works by Natalia Goncharova, Alexandra Ekster, Olga Rozanova, Nadezhda Udaltsova, Lyubov Popova, Varvara Stepanova and Sonia Delaunay, as well as texts, biographies and photographs. They all became pioneers in the creation and dissemination of the new artistic languages, leading them in many ways and marking an important milestone in art history.
