GR 65.5: Santiago Path
This GR is one of the three branches that converged during the high Middle Ages on the Santiago Path from Paris that entered Spain at Roncesvalles.
There are another two branches opened by the Federations of Aragón and Navarra. The GR 65.3 enters through the Port of Somport that, from Barcelona and Sant Cugat del Vallès, passed Montserrat, Igualada, Cervera, Tàrrega and Lleida to enter Aragón and, through Zaragoza, reach Logroño, where it joined the main Santiago Path, the present GR 65. The outline of the GR 65.5 follows the old Roman road from Tarraco to Caesaraugusta, passing through Constantí, with its Centcelles mausoleum, the tomb of Constantino The Young, son of the famous Roman emperor Constantino The Great. It climbs through La Selva and Albiol to the Prades Massif and drops down to Ulldemolins, coinciding on this stretch with the GR 171 to then rise up to the crest of the sierra La Llena, which it follows until Mequinenza, where it crosses the river Ebro to enter Aragón and cross the Monegros towards Zaragoza and Logroño. This stretch from Mequinenza to Logroño is still under study by the Aragonese Federation.
