Gallery in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. Madrid.© Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza.

If you are coming to Madrid and you like paintings, you must come to Madrid's Art Route. On this route there are several important art galleries: The Prado, the Thyssen-Bornemisza, the Reina Sofía National Art Museum, and Caixa Forum. The links below the text contain the latest information on the temporary exhibitions in these galleries.

On this route you will come across many masterpieces from different artistic movements, not too far from each other. The four art galleries are situated around the Paseo del Prado avenue, where you can also find other important landmarks such as the Cibeles and Neptune fountains (18th century), the Royal Botanical Gardens and the Astronomical Observatory. At the Prado Museum you can find the best paintings by the Spanish, Italian and Flemish schools, from the 12th to the 18th centuries. It contains famous masterpieces such as Velázquez's "Las Meninas", and Hieronymus Bosch's "The Garden of Earthly Delights". The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum houses one of the most valuable private collections in the world and includes artworks by Monet, Van Gogh and Kandinsky, amongst others. The Reina Sofía National Art Museum is more avant-garde and has contemporary art on display together with iconic paintings like Picasso's "Guernica". Caixa Forum Madrid was the last gallery to be opened in this area known as the "art triangle". It combines traditional and modern paintings, organises cultural activities and has Spain's first vertical garden. Click on the image or the text that you want in order to find out more about each one of these places on Madrid's Art Route, or about their temporary exhibitions.
