GR 21: Ignaciano - Javier Loiola Path
This path runs along the path in Navarra that, in 1512, was used to move Saint Ignacio de Loyola to his birthplace after having been wounded in front of the walls of Pamplona during the invasion and occupation of the Kingdom of Navarra.
This path, which runs from the capital city of Navarra to Loyola, extends with another two that, from Pamplona, lead to Javier for the traditional Javieradas, religious marches that take place en masse during the first two weeks of March. On the occasion of the 5th Centenary of the birth of Saint Ignacio de Loyola, promoted by the Jesuits worldwide, the birthplaces of the patron saints of Guipúzcoa and Navarra were joined together. In terms of the part in Navarra, the route crosses this autonomous community from east to west through the centre over varying land and countryside, where Mediterranean and Cantabrian influences merge in a gentle transition from one to another. With extensive cultural contents, the stretch from Pamplona to Javier has two variants: the northern route and the southern route. From Pamplona to the border with Guipúzcoa, the route uses part of the old El Plazaola railway track. It joins the GR 12 A, B and C in Ardanatz, Lumbier and Javier/Xabier, the GR 12 in Lekunberri, the GR 20 in Lekunberri, Betelu and Azkárate and the GR 121 in Zarate (border with Guipúzcoa).
