The Nalón river, the most important river in Asturias, flows through this area. The oceanic-type vegetation in these parts consists of vast forests of chestnut, oak, beech and poplar. The characteristic greenness of the vegetation, and the climate, gives the landscape its distinctive freshness. The fauna includes wild boar, deer, grouse and the occasional brown bear.
