The Reina Sofia Museum presents an unprecedented exhibition of Russian avant-garde art and Dadaism, in which it explores the innovation and artistic restlessness shared by both movements.
The exhibition aims to assert Russian artists’ contribution and links to the aesthetic radicalism of Dada, highlighting the multimedia character of art and its political implications during the First World War, two Russian Revolutions and the change from Lenin to Stalin. There are almost 500 works, including paintings, collages, drawings, photographs, films and documents, from around 90 Russian and other European artists. These include, among many others, Nathan Altman, Valentina Kulagina, El Lissitzky, Alexander Rodchenko, Francis Picabia, Man Ray and Vladimir Tatlin. The selected works show the intention of numerous artists to not only involve themselves in projects of public unrest, but also to adopt denial, irony, the absurd and chance as the basic principles of their artistic manifestations.
