Libraries and museums

Spain has a very extensive network of libraries and museums throughout the country, containing some of the most valuable cultural and artistic treasures in the world.

The most important library is the National Library, which is located in Madrid and opened in 1712.There are 25 million items in its collection. It has a large amount of unique and ancient books and incunables. It also has an extraordinary collection of engravings and manuscripts.Other hugely valuable libraries include the Complutense University library, the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo del Escorial library and the Indies Archive.The network of public libraries is very extensive and access is normally free or almost free, providing several facilities to students and researchers who wish to look at the collections that are not accessible to the general public.This is the same at the museums. There are over 1,400 museums and museographic collections in Spain.
