A outdoor dinner of “picoteo” or “tapas” Relaxed plans are more appealing than ever during the hot months. For this reason, we suggest you go for a traditional informal Spanish dinner and have some tapas. In Madrid there are some very popular areas for this type of “picoteo” dinner, which means to taste or eat a little bit of everything. This is the case of the neighbourhoods of La Latina, Las Letras and Malasaña or the area around Calle Ponzano and Plaza Olavide. People also like to go to the terraces at gastronomic markets like San Ildefonso, Barceló and San Antón, or places such as The Hat, El Viajero, the garden at Casa Árabe or El Paracaidista.

Outdoor shows There is a vast programme of summer concerts, theatre performances and shows in Madrid, and many of these take place outdoors. Great places to go are the Matadero, Conde Duque and the University Complutense Botanical Garden. All three of these hold many activities including concerts, DJ sets, gastronomic events and dance workshops. In addition, every summer the Veranos de la Villa summer festival takes place. The festival's programme includes all kinds of shows in different open spaces such as the Buen Retiro Park, the Debod Temple viewing point or Plaza Mayor square.
Cocktails up high In summer, the popular saying “De Madrid al cielo” (“From Madrid to heaven”) makes more sense than ever with the opening of rooftop terraces which are perfect places for a night-time cocktail. For example, in the area of Gran Vía and calle Alcalá the best ones can be found at Círculo de Bellas Artes, The Principal Madrid and Oscar Room Mate hotels and Palacio de Cibeles. While in the barrio de Las Letrasneighbourhood, the ones at Urban Hotel and Hotel Me Madrid stand out.

Horse racing by night El Hipódromo de la Zarzuelaracecourse, on the outskirts of the city has a large terrace with green outdoor spaces, a restaurant and a cocktail bar perfect for cooling down on a hot night. Additionally, on most Thursday nights in the summer there are the Noches del Hipódromo, featuring horse races and the chance to place your bets. Summer cinemas Open-air, often in original version and a combination of the latest films, old classics or themed offerings. Every summer there are even more cinema choices in Madrid. We can recommend these three very special ones: Palacio de Cibeles, because of the location (in the glass gallery); Centro Cultural Conde Duque, for the pleasant surroundings; and the Parque de la Bombilla, for being the city's most classic summer cinema which has been running for over 30 years.
A bar which is... frozen To finish, we can reveal a very cool place: the frozen igloo Ice Bar. Here, you will forget all about the heat even in August, as the temperature inside is below zero degrees Celsius.
