GR 98: Round Trip of the Biosphere Reserve of Urdaibai
This route runs within the district of Busturialdea, a district declared a Biosphere Reserve by the UNESCO in 1984 due to its natural interest.
Urdaibai is an unbeatable place for birdspotting, constituting one of the few wetlands in this part of Europe with such good preservation, which has been included in the list of areas of the Ramsar Agreement and in the European Union Natura 2000 Network as a Special Bird Protection Area (SBPA). Two variants to the GR 123, Round Trip to Bizkaia, were made in1995 : the GR 123.2, which ran around the perimeter of the unbeatable environment of Urdaibai and the GR 123.3 that entered the lowlands and salt marshes of the river Oka. In 1998 the Vizcaya Footpath Federation decided to eliminate these variants to join them together in a single route, leading to what is now the GR 98.
