GR 36: Sierra of Espadán
The Sierra of Espadán is a line of mountains from northeast to southeast on the last spurs of the Sistema Ibérico.
It spreads between the basins of the rivers Mijares and Palancia, to the south of the province of Castellón. Its maximum heights are La Rápita (1,103 m.) and El Espadán (1,099 m.). The GR 36 runs mostly along the old horseshoe paths or, where these are lost, along forest trails. The predominant landscape includes cork oak forests with a rich undergrowth of bushes as a result of a very damp microclimate. The most important resources are cork extraction and the springs and waterfalls that have made the sierra famous throughout the autonomous community. The main two district towns are the neighbouring Segorbe, notable for its cathedral, and Onda, known for its tile tradition and where you can visit the El Carmen Museum of Natural Science and the Castle, without forgetting the localities along the path with an extensive cultural heritage. The long stay of the Muslims can be see in the place names of its villages, in the rural architecture of its steep whitewashed streets and in its castles. The "neveras", old constructions used to preserve the snow, are present in the area near to the GR (nevera of Castro, Alquimia and Villamalur). The locality of Montanejos is notable for the beauty of the landscape in the El Mijares strait and the spa baths.
