Nature lovers will admire the beautiful scenery of the Orotava valley, near the town, and the towering silhouette of Mount Teide, Spain’s tallest mountain.A pioneer in developing Tenerife as a holiday destination, Puerto de la Cruz has a long tradition as a resort, starting in the late 19th century with its spa in what is now the Hotel-Casino Taoro. In just a few decades, the town established itself as a major tourist centre, thanks to its exceptional qualities: a pleasant climate, a beautiful volcanic coastline, and the unique landscapes of theValley of La Orotava. The city, spread around its small harbour, has broad avenues and lush parks, making a stroll the best way to explore it. It also boasts historic buildings, such as San Felipe castle, San Telmo chapel and the church of Nuestra Señora de la Peña.The harbourThe streets around Plaza del Charco are lively at any time of day, as is the lovely promenade, full of restaurants and pavement cafés. The harbour area is one of the city’s most historic, with the Casa de la Aduana customs house and the old dock, which is still authentically nautical. But there are other attractions in the harbour, such as Lago Martiánez, a project designed by Lanzarote’s most famous son, the architect César Manrique. This is an unusual set of seawater swimming pools, built on the volcanic shore and surrounded by lush greenery, and is the perfect spot to take a break or enjoy a swim. Most of the hotels in Puerto de la Cruz are on the seafront, on the beautiful volcanic sand beaches, like Playa Jardín and Playa Martiánez. These places have ample services, including nightclubs, restaurants, shops, sports activities and plenty more. On the outskirts of town you can enjoy the Botanical Gardens. Created in the late 18th century, this park displays a huge variety of tropical plants and trees from all over the world. And you can have an unforgettable day at Loro Parque, a zoo with shows starring parrots and dolphins. As well as admiring the beauty of the Valley of La Orotava, nature lovers can visit the Teide, which is the tallest mountain in Spain at 3718 metres. This volcanic peak lends its name to the Teide National Park, with many native plant and animal species, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2007. You can complete this route with a visit to the Corona Forestal Natural Park, which surrounds the Teide National Park.Local cuisine and areaThe people of Tenerife are very fond of eating at “guachinches”, characterful restaurants where you can enjoy the most traditional cuisine, such as their vegetable soups and fish casseroles. The local fish species “vieja” (parrotfish) is very popular, as are sardines, mackerel, wreckfish, and porgy. Local meat dishes include carne en adobo (meat stew) and rabbit in salmorejo. And of course, the famous “papas” arrugadas (boiled salted potatoes), served with mojos (sauces). To accompany your meal, you could select one of the five Designation of Origin wines made in Tenerife: Abona, Tacoronte-Acentejo, Valle de Güimar, Valle de la Orotava and Ycoden-Daute-Isora.Puerto de la Cruz is a good starting point for excursions around the north of Tenerife. La Orotava, in the valley of the same name, is an official heritage town with many grand houses in the traditional colonial style of the Canary Islands. Icod de los Vinos has beautiful traditional architecture and famous spots like the thousand-year-old dragon tree (a native species). Garachico was once an important port and has buildings of great historic interest, such as San Miguel castle, the church of Santa Ana, and the Palace of the Condes de La Gomera. On the way to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, it’s worth stopping in San Cristóbal de La Laguna. The Cathedral, the church of La Concepción, and the Bishop’s Palace are a few of the gems in its historic quarter, a World Heritage site. Finally, we come to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Around its important port there are wide avenues, squares and exotic green spaces. The capital of Tenerife, it is famous for its Carnival, one of the most spectacular in Spain. A fiesta of International Tourist Interest, it’s known for its fabulous costumes and the lively parades of murgas, comparsas and rondallas (musical groups). There are many hotels all over the island, but it’s best to book well in advance if you want to enjoy the carnival.
