La Sevilla Mudéjar

In La Sevilla Mudéjar we will take a walk through history, discovering a unique art in Europe, since if we look for a cultural element that differentiates Spain from other European countries, we would probably choose the footprint left by Islamic civilization during eight centuries of presence in our territory. And although there are many immaterial traces of this Islamic presence, the most tangible would be the Mudejar architecture. The term Mudéjar was adopted in the 19th century to describe all those Christian artistic and cultural expressions that manifested a clear Islamic origin, whether they were civil works (Casa Palacios) or religious (churches). And it is that the etymological origin of the word Mudejar ("muddayán"), seems to mean "those who were allowed to stay". But, what neighborhoods did these Mudejars inhabit, what were their customs and their artistic contribution to the Gothic and Renaissance styles? With this route we will answer these and many other questions, taking a tour through the different Mudejar churches that populate the North of the Historic Center of Seville, starting with the recently restored church of Santa Catalina. We will get to the nearby parish of San Marcos, Santa Marina, Ómnium Sanctorum… But we will also see a Mudejar civil work, the Palace of the Marqueses de la Algaba, currently the Mudejar Museum.Come and experience “a comfortable and near East”, as romantic travelers described Seville in the 19th century.
