Summer nights in Spain are perfect for enjoying the outdoors. The temperatures are outdoor-friendly, and a lot of original entertainment is on offer in Spain during these months.

These are nights where you can enjoy flamenco shows in unique settings. They can be experienced especially in Andalusia over the summer. For example, the Festival of Granada takes place in July in the Alhambra, Seville holds shows in the gardens of the Real Alcázar Palace, and at the Cordoba Guitar Festival, many of the concerts are held in the bullring and on the city's streets.

  • NIGHTS IN THE ROMAN EMPIRE

    Mérida Classical Theatre Festival

Mérida is the place to go, as its International Classical Theatre Festival takes place between July and August. The main stage is the city's Roman theatre, which is over 2000 years old. In addition, you can visit temples and monuments that have been conserved since Mérida's time of splendour during the Roman era.

  • MUSICAL NIGHTS IN A CAVE

These take place at Cova d'en Xoroi, on the island of Minorca, and Cueva de los Jameos del Agua on the island of Lanzarote. Nights on the former are legendary, especially during summer when you can also enjoy live music at this exclusive location with sea views. Regarding the latter, Cueva de los Jameos is a lava tube which has been transformed into a charming space by artist César Manrique, blending architecture and nature. It holds concerts and DJ sets.

  • CULTURAL NIGHTS UNDER THE MOON

These are guided night-time tours of emblematic monuments and cities. Perhaps Granada's Alhambra and the Great Mosque of Cordoba are the most remarkable because they allow you to visit the site in a much calmer way, with fewer people than during the day. Nevertheless, there are guided night-time tours in almost all of Spain's tourist cities during the summer. In some cases, there are also dramatised tours.

  • NIGHTS OF PURIFYING FIRE

On June 23, the shortest night of the year, Spain celebrates the Bonfires of San Juan fiesta. During this night, it is traditional to make small bonfires and jump over them at dawn. Why? As the legend goes, the fire purifies the soul of those who jump over it. The fiesta is celebrated in many cities and beaches. The bonfires of Alicante and A Coruña are recognised as Fiestas of International Tourist Interest.

  • CANDLELIGHT NIGHTS

In Vejer de la Frontera (Cádiz) and Pedraza (Segovia), you can spend a magical summer night by candlelight. Vejer de la Frontera is one of Cadiz’s famous white towns and at the beginning of June its historical centre becomes filled with candles. For its part, Pedraza is completely lit up by thousands of candles on the first and second Saturdays of July. In both places, live music accompanies the candlelight night.

  • NIGHTS FULL OF LIGHT

The New Cathedral of Salamanca lit up during the “Light and Avant-garde Arts” festival

Each June, Salamanca holds the Light and Avant-garde Arts festival, lighting up many of its World Heritage monuments. Buildings are transformed into screens and visual effects and light shows are projected onto them. In Toledo, on one night in September, monuments are used as a canvas for light creations based on El Greco's works. This is the “Lux Greco” festival.
