The gastronomy of Navarre, worth its own museum

Location

Comunidad Foral de Navarra

The word “museum” conjures up paintings and sculptures, but Navarre (in northern Spain) offers something quite different: culinary museums dedicated to delicious local products, such as honey, truffles, wine, olive oil, or cheese. You'll learn the secrets of how they are made, and you can also take a souvenir home with you. Get ready to see… and to taste.

Cheese and Transhumance Museum. Uztárroz You'll find this curious museum in the heart of the Roncal valley, the perfect place to enjoy the delicious Roncal cheese, with its own Protected Designation of Origin. Visitors to the museum (entrance is free) can see photographs and items explaining transhumance shepherding and cheese-making (shepherd's clothing, sheep shears, branding irons, etc.)Truffle Museum. MetautenThis is the first national museum dedicated to truffles. Visitors will find a modern building with interactive multimedia projections, exhibitions, a children's area (where younger visitors will meet 'trufita') and an area selling products. Simply exquisite. And if you love gourmet food, a Truffle Fair is held every winter in Valdorba, where you can see a demonstration of how truffles are collected, and enjoy dishes flavoured with this famous fungus. Ezkurdi Beekeeping House-Museum. EltsoArtisanal honeys, honey jam, chocolates, soaps, creams, candles, pollen, wax, royal jelly… these are just a few of the products that you can acquire in this charming museum in a traditional family house. And while you're there, you can also see how honey is made in the beehive, how it is extracted, and an exhibition on the history of beekeeping. Sound interesting?

Olive Oil Museum. ArrónizThis large space of 120 square metres displays original machinery from a primitive trujal (olive oil mill) which was still in use as late as the 1960s. It’s a unique opportunity to see local archaeology in the form of scales, carts, tanks and urns, and to learn how this precious liquid is made.Remember that some of these museums may require advance booking for groups and on particular days of the week. You can find all the information on the Navarre Tourist Office website. Are you ready to start tasting?
