2018, ‘Year of Murillo’ in Seville

Seville is a ‘marvellous’ city in itself, but in 2018 it will have even more to offer: particularly in relation to the Baroque painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. Homages and events have been scheduled up until March 2019 to commemorate the fourth centenary of his birth, and will be sure to revolutionise the streets of the Andalusian capital.

Guided tours through the city, exhibitions, concerts, music events and audiovisual and educational activities including an international congress. The intense programme of events planned for the ‘Year of Murillo’ will allow the essence of this artist, considered a precursor of modern painting, to be brought to the main museums, plazas and stages in Seville. Do you want to see his essential works of art?

His work is being brought back to his birthplace

The Museum of Fine Arts is hosting the first of the exhibitions paying homage to the Andalusian artist: ‘Murillo and the Capuchins of Seville’, from 28 November 2017 to 1 April 2018. It will be followed by: ‘Murillo and his trail in Seville’, with some of the painter's more original paintings; ‘Murillo in the Cathedral of Seville’, concerning the painter’s relationship with the Church; and ‘Murillo and the ephemeral architectures’. The ‘400th Anniversary' anthology (from 29 November 2018 to 17 March 2019), including more than 50 pieces as an overview of Murillo's work, will draw a close to this exhibition section. In short, it will be a great opportunity to see works by the Spanish painter which belong to international galleries and which will be shown for the first time in the city of the Guadalquivir river.

Routes through the life of Murillo

Who did Murillo paint his canvases for? Who was he inspired by? Why do certain objects appear in his works? What is the ultimate significance of his paintings? The ‘Murillo Itineraries’ will help respond to these and many other questions. An initiative that forms part of the tourist and cultural attractions in Seville through two routes: ‘In the footsteps of Murillo’ –visit to the buildings most frequented by the painter or to those for which he made some of his most relevant works – and ‘Murillo’s views’, for an understanding of the themes that the artist dealt with in his work. References to the painter will be present in each and every corner of the city that is in some way related to his biography, with allusions and decorations from the seventeenth century, for example. We've informed you: Seville and Murillo will make for a perfect combination in 2018!

Baroque music and art

In terms of music, the Baroque programme ‘Under the sign of Murillo’ will run through various chapels in the city, with pieces played by groups and local soloists. International groups L’Arpeggiata, Les Arts Florissants, Vocal Consort Berlin and soloists and directors such as Dmitry Sinkowsky, Emma Kirkby, Paul Agnew and Marco Beasly, amongst others, will participate in the ‘Murillo’s Europe’ programme. A unique opportunity to enjoy the best classical music in temples and other locations with ideal acoustics.

Festivals from the era

Through ‘Murillo and the American Seville’ the festivities of the Indian Fleet will be recreated. Theatrical dramatisations will take place in emblematic places in the city such as the House of Trade, the Puerta de la Aduana, the Carretería neighbourhood, Barcas Bridge, La Sardina (currently the Barranco market), the Shipyards or the Gold Tower and will draw to a close with a concert at the Muelle de la Sal, with a display of lights, fireworks and cannon shots. Visiting the facet of Seville of one of the most important Spanish painters of all time forms part of the recommended plan for 2018. Don’t miss out!
