Baqueira-Beret in the Lleida Pyrenees
This is Spain’s biggest and most popular ski resort, with 153 km of ski trails. Tucked away in the villages of Catalonia, it might seem far removed from the hustle and bustle of civilization, but it’s only 4 hours from Barcelona. Whether you’re an advanced skier, just starting out on the bunny slopes, or simply want to hide out in one of the wooden mountain villages and gaze at the beautiful scenery from inside a warm cottage… there’s something for everyone!
Sierra Nevada in Andalucia
Imagine this: Waking up in the sky-high mountains of southern Spain’s Sierra Nevada and spending the morning on the slopes, then traveling a half hour and spending the afternoon strolling down the beach. Sounds too good to be true? It’s not! The Sierra Nevada ski resort is the most southern resort in Europe. Thus, expect that bright Andalusian sun beating down on you as you ski down Spain’s highest mountains! Located just outside of Granada, you can sleep in the city’s UNESCO Moorish old town by night, and by day ski down snowcapped mountains up to 3,300 km in height.
Formigal in the Aragon Pyrenees
Home to the 2008 Alpine Junior World Ski Championships, this is the perfect ski resort if you are traveling with kids! Complete with snow “playgrounds” and specialized facilities and activities for kids, it’s the ideal destination for a snowy-family getaway. Located in the northwest of Spain close to the border of France, the Aramon Formigal Panticosa resort stretches across four valleys with a wide variety of beginner to advanced paths, all connected by a resort-sponsored bus. There are over 90 different runs, so you’re sure not to get bored!
Navacerrada in Madrid
In the capital and want a quick snowy escape? Located only 32 miles from Madrid, the quaint Navacerrada ski resort is just a hop and a skip from the craziness of the capital! Divided into upper and lower areas, everything from beginner to difficult pistes are available.
La Molina in the Catalan Pyrenees
Want to ski over history? Put on your mittens and head to Spain’s oldest ski resort! Dating back to 1909, this Catalonian snow haven has been a day trip destination for Barcelonians for over a century. Since then, they’ve remodeled and renovated, making a resort complete with 50 km of well maintained runs. If you’re in Barcelona, just hop on a direct train and you’ll be there in a short 3.5 hours!
