There are two big sale seasons in Spain…and we are in the midst of one of them right now! Summer and winter are when the big sales are in Spain, marked by ginormous discounts in every store. Not only are there incredible big brands, but also artisan boutique stores throughout the country, made by…you guessed; local Spanish artisans! Finally, did you know that Spain is home to the biggest street market in Europe? Yes! Read on to find out where ;) Ready…set…let’s shop! Here are our top recommended shopping destinations.
The shopping big leagues: Madrid & Barcelona
Madrid has got everything a shopaholic could dream of and more. From the huge, three floor stores lining Gran Via and Puerta del Sol, to tiny one-of-a-kind boutiques and vintage stores you’ll only find in Malasaña. For those into luxury clothing, runway looks and designer goods, head to barrio Salamanca, where you’ll find a buyer’s paradise on Calle de Serrano. Or, find more affordable and trendy stores on Fuencarral, sure to have something irresistible for everyone. Want something completely unique from Spain? Wake up early on Sunday morning and head to El Rastro! Remember when we mentioned Spain is home to Europe’s biggest street market? Well, El Rastro is it! Bargain for amazing deals on leather purses, funky jewelry, leather jackets to take you into the fall season, backpacks for back-to-school…you name it! El Rastro has got it. Next stop? Barcelona! We’ll start where most every tourist starts their shopping adventure: in Passeig de Gracia. Here, you’ll find your big name brand stores, including everything from luxury international brands, to Spanish-originated stores like Zara. Not into the big brands? Make your way to the winding, skinny streets of Barrio Gothic! There, you’ll find countless tiny boutiques, all decked out with one-of-a-kind clothing, jewelry, shoes, pottery…the list goes on. The coolest part? Many of these boutiques are filled with goods handmade by the owner himself. Warning: you WILL get lost in the curving streets of Barrio Gothic all day. Wear your walking shoes! Or buy them ;) While in the neighborhood, go to Barrio Gothic’s trendy next door neighbor, El Born. There, find more trendy, artisan boutiques. Still haven’t gotten your boutique fix? Next, go to El Raval, where you’ll find even more privately owned boutique shops, usually with a story to tell. As if you didn’t already have enough!
Not into the big cities?
Even the tiniest of villages have great shops, often filled with products made by local artisans. Some other great shopping cities to take note of: Granada’s Albaycín neighborhood for Moroccan-inspired and “hippie” goods, Sevilla for traditional Andalusian-styled clothing and accessories, and finally the Canary Islands and Balearic Islands for beachwear. So what are you waiting for to get the hottest back-to-school and work trends for the best bargains? If you are thinking of end-of-summer shopping destinations, look no further and come to visit Spain!
