Description
The construction of Palencia Cathedral, known as 'the undiscovered beauty', began in the 14th century on the site of the crypt of San Antolín, and was completed in the 16th. Its exterior is in the flamboyant Gothic style and there are flamboyant Gothic, Isabelline, Plateresque and Renaissance styles in the interior. The floor plan has three naves with a transept and ambulatory, flanked by five small apses. All the vaults of the temple are ogival. Highlights of the Renaissance altarpiece in the Main Chapel include paintings by Juan de Flandes. The retrochoir is in the Plateresque style and its altarpiece is the work of the painter Jan Joes. The interior of the cathedral houses the sarcophagus of Queen Doña Urraca and the tomb of Doña Inés de Osorio. Of particular note in the Cathedral Museum are a diptych by Berruguete and a Saint Sebastian by El Greco.
