Description

Spain’s largest and one of the most important in Europe is celebrating its 200 year anniversary with an exceptional programme, centred around a unique story of art and culture which began on 19 November 1819.

Exhibitions at the museum, activities in the rest of Spain, workshops and online seminars are just the start in the 200th anniversary of the Prado Museum. Founded as the Royal Museum of Paintings and with just 311 paintings from the Royal Collection, today it is one of the world’s great museums, with essential works by Spanish masters like Goya and Velázquez. However long you have in Madrid, you should make sure to visit it. The museum offers special tours for making the most of a one, two or three hour visit. The Bicentenary in the Museum The history and evolution of the museum is the subject of the “Prado 200” exhibition schedule (second half of 2019). The museum will also present important exhibitions including: - Alberto Giacometti at the Museo del Prado: April to July. - Fra Angelico and the Rise of the Florentine Renaissance: June to September. - Velázquez, Rembrandt, Vermeer. Shared Ways of Seeing in Spain and Holland: June to September. - I Can Spare Only Willpower. Drawings by Goya: November 2019 to February 2020. The performing arts are also joining in the celebrations, with contributions by the Zarzuela Theatre, the National Classic Theatre Company, the Spanish National Orchestra and the National Dance Company. Over the year they will present several different shows, which you can see on the museum website. The Bicentenary in the rest of Spain Selected works from the Prado Museum will tour Spain during the anniversary and will be on show in museums in many cities, including Almería, Badajoz, Cadiz, Gijón, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, León, Mahón and Pontevedra. Meanwhile, the photography exhibition “The Prado in the Streets” will recreate a little Prado Museum in the towns of Mérida, Jerez de la Frontera, Cartagena, Elche, Albacete, Zamora, Palencia and Eibar.
