Description

This exhibition shows how at the turn of the century the Mediterranean Sea became the driving force behind the artistic revolutions for painters including Monet, Renoir, Matisse, Braque and Sorolla.

The passage from the 19th to 20th century led to a rediscovery of the sea across Europe, and in particular the Mediterranean Sea. Numerous artists such as Monet, Renoir, Cézanne, Derain, Braque, Matisse, Sorolla, Picasso and Giorgio de Chirico adopted the Mediterranean, its landscape, culture and idea as one of the main components of their compositions, marking a decisive moment in the evolution of art The exhibition displays 138 works by these artists who used the “Mare Nostrum” as a way to connect the old and the modern, and as a place of artistic freedom, which led to one of the most impressive eras in the history of painting.
