Picasso Museum Malaga

When it opened in 2003, Picasso’s wish for his work to be represented in his native town finally became a reality. The collection was donated by his daughter-in-law and grandson, Christine and Bernard Ruiz-Picasso, and shows the different periods of his work in drawings, paintings, prints, sculptures, and ceramics. In total, more than 270 works by the genius creator of Cubism are on display. The museum is housed in the Renaissance Buenavista Palace, which also has an archaeological site in its basement where you can visit Phoenician and Roman remains.

Pompidou Centre Malaga

Opened in 2015, the Malaga gallery is the first and only branch of the famous Parisian art centre outside France. It is located in the port, on the dock Muelle Uno, in an original coloured glass building, called the “Cubo”, easy to spot. The museum provides an overview of 20th and 21st century art in around seventy works selected from the collection in Paris, including such great figures as Francis Bacon, Frida Kahlo, Max Ernst, Alberto Giacometti, Giorgio de Chirico, Brâncusi, Joan Miró, Picasso, and Antoni Tàpies.

Collection of the St Petersburg Russian Museum / Malaga

The Malaga home of the Russian State Museum, opened in March 2015, holds a hundred carefully chosen pieces which form an impressive display of Russian artistic heritage from the 15th to the 20th centuries. The works range from icons in the Byzantine tradition to the socialist realism style, with artists of the stature of Kandinsky, Rodchenko, and Chagall. The centre is housed in the Tabacalera, the former cigarette factory, and offers two temporary exhibitions per year, with works from the main collection in Russia.

Carmen Thyssen Museum in Malaga

The museum opened in 2011 in the Palacio de Villalón, a 16th century mansion in the old quarter of the city. Its magnificent collection of 240 works provides a thorough grounding in the main genres and styles of 19th century Spanish painting. Movements such as Romanticism, Costumbrismo, Preciosismo, and Realism, and the early 20th century avant-garde are reflected in paintings by Mariano Fortuny, Raimundo de Madrazo, Joaquín Sorolla, Ramón Casas, Julio Romero de Torres, and Zuloaga.

Contemporary Art Centre of Malaga. CAC Málaga

Since it opened in 2003, CAC Málaga has become one of the leading centres on the European art scene devoted to showing the latest, most avant-garde trends in art. Its spaces and activities focus on the visual arts from the last third of the 20th century to the present. The permanent collection features work by contemporary artists like Daniel Canogar, Marina Abramovich, Louise Bourgeois, and Juan Uslé.
