Come to Spain in autumn, the perfect season for enjoying the beauty and magic of our forests. At this time of year the trees dazzle with hues of ochre, orange, red and gold. The endless shades make the hills and woods more beautiful than ever.

As Spain is the second most mountainous country in western Europe, it is surprisingly rich in beech forests. These cool, leafy woodlands are mostly found in the green north of the country. The list is long, but some of the most stunning beech forests are in the Picos de Europa National Park; Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park; Hayedo de la Pedrosa, in Segovia; Hayedo de Peña Roya beech forest, one of the most southerly in Europe, on the Sierra del Rincón hills of Madrid, and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve; Tejera Negra Natural Park, in Guadalajara; Señorío de Bértiz Natural Park, in Navarre; Hayedo de Peña Roya in Moncayo Natural Park, Zaragoza; in the volcanic region of La Garrotxa in Girona; and many more.

As you walk in these natural spaces a sea of leaves surrounds you, and the different shapes and colours of the trees create striking landscapes. The beech trees in these beautiful forests turn copper and gold in autumn, mingling with oak, chestnut and birch, with mist often adding a final touch of atmosphere.

As always, the local Tourist Offices in each place will be able to recommend the best routes and excursions.
