What are the wines like?
D.O. Empordà encompasses a vast complexity of land where a highly varied range of wines are produced. Its reds are of great quality, have a lot of body, and are well constituted and harmonious. On the palate they are well-rounded, flavoursome and very pleasant. Fresh and tasty white wines are also produced here, often with local varieties. As well as rosés, characterised by their well-defined cherry colour, great body and delicate aroma. The Garnatxa de l'Empordà is the most notable wine from the area: a natural sweet wine made with the grape variety that gives it its name. It is a generous wine, which gains its flavour from ripe, warm and silky grapes.
What will I find?
Empordà boasts breathtaking landscapes of vineyards, wines that transmit the essence of the Mediterranean, and world-famous gastronomy; with an authentic constellation of Michelin stars and an unlimited offer of home cooking, closely linked to the land and local products, many of which have awakened curiosity and given tourists reason to visit the area. It also has high quality hotel and tourist infrastructures linked to sun and beach, cultural, active, and food and wine tourism. As well as a range of companies offering activities and proposals related to the world of wine, such as aromatic plant tastings amidst nature, cooking workshops, kayak excursions along the border of the vineyards in the Costa Brava, sensory tastings that mix light, music, colour and aromas and bicycle routes between the vineyards. A whole range of experiences that bring the ancient culture of wine in the Costa Brava closer to visitors.
How to get there
By land, sea or air, Empordà has a privileged geographical location and ideal infrastructures to enable you to get here. Located in Catalunya, in the north-east of Spain, north of the province of Girona, it has its own airport: Girona – Costa Brava, with low cost flights and charters to many European countries. In addition, Barcelona-El Prat International Airport is just 150 km away. Empordà can also be reached by sea, since many types of cruises sailing through the Mediterranean stop off at the ports of Rosas and Palamós. Finally, by land, there are high-speed train (AVE and TGV) connections between both Girona and Figueres to Madrid, Barcelona, Paris and Montpelier.
As you follow this route, you can discover lovely towns and villages like Figueres, Cadaqués, Roses, Palamós, Peralada… With the Pyrenees to the north and the Costa Brava to the east, there is a fascinating contrast between coastal and mountain scenery throughout the area. As well as vineyards, there are unspoilt, charming fishing villages, medieval towns inland, and many examples of the Surrealist art of the famous painter Salvador Dalí. We recommend taking your time over this route - explore each place at leisure, and enjoy the experiences of tastings beside the sea, visits to wine museums, and hotels surrounded by vineyards.
