Nature, mountains and Romanesque art in the Arán Valley
Arties is at 1,114 metres above sea level and is in a small opening in the High Arán Valley. It is dominated by the Montarto peak, which reaches almost 3,000 metres.
Outstanding in the old part is the Santa María Parish Church, a Romanesque construction from the 11th-12th centuries, whose bell tower is a somewhat later addition (13th-14th centuries). The number and quality of its paintings are outstanding. Also worthy of mention is the Gothic church of Sant Joan (end of the 14th century), along with two civil buildings - Çò de Paulet House and Portolá House, both from the 16th century. On the edge of arties there are some baths with waters rich in sulphur and two springs. In the village you will also find an open-air recreation area, home to two bears that live in a protected, marked area. For fishing lovers, the Garona River and the lakes around the village are ideal.
