Exhibition: Sorolla. A Garden to Paint
© Fundación Museo Sorolla
Joaquín Sorolla, Reflejos de una fuente (Reflections in a Fountain), 1908. Sorolla Museum
More than 170 oil paintings, sketches, drawings, sculptures, tiles and photographs welcome us to discover how Joaquín Sorolla designed his own artist garden, making it a space for beauty, for delighting the senses and for creating art.
The paintings of the courtyards and gardens of the Reales Alcázares in Seville and the Alhambra in Granada, which Sorolla painted between 1909 and 1911 were crucial to his creation of the garden of his house in Madrid. Sorolla brought to his home the places, elements, motifs, colours and sounds he knew so well in his pictures, and used them to create a paradise and personal refuge worthy of his talents. As well as views and compositions, he also brought physical objects home from Andalusia - the fountains, tiles, statues, plants and trees which fascinated him so much. The exhibition shows the models which inspired him, and the passion and dedication the Valencian painter brought to one of his greatest creations: his garden.
