Sorolla. Tireless Illustrator

Exhibition - Illustration

The Bancaja Foundation is exhibiting for the first time a wide selection of drawings by Joaquín Sorolla.

Sorolla dedicated himself tirelessly to illustration and drawing. On many occasions they were preparatory sketches for his paintings, above all the large format ones. He did others as a form of entertainment or he used them as a tool to remember his loved ones by. In total, there are around 8,000 drawings by Joaquín Sorolla in existence and around 5,000 of them are preserved at the Sorolla Museum in Madrid, where most of the works on display have originated from.

The exhibition of over a hundred drawings is divided into four sections: Drawing, family, home; The first line, with drawings done in his youth; Great works, great drawings, which shows some of the preparatory sketches he did for his paintings, and The modern city, referring to his illustrations of urban scenes in cities like New York and Chicago.
