“Je suis le cahier” (I am the sketchbook). This phrase written by Picasso in one of his sketchbooks illustrates how important they were to his work. Barcelona's Picasso Museum is exhibiting the 19 sketchbooks in its collection.
Did you know that Picasso saved all of his sketchbooks? They were one of his most important tools - he used them to investigate and experiment in search of better solutions for his creative process. In total he filled 175 sketchbooks and the Picasso Museum in Barcelona preserves 19 of them. The drawings in the sketchbooks are being displayed using technology, alongside other work by Picasso to provide them with context. Family portraits, landscapes, works in plaster and sculptures are just some of the artworks on show, from the museum’s own collection and on loan from the Royal Academy of San Fernando, the Prado Museum, and the National Art Museum of Catalonia, among others.
