Dante Alighieri at the Spanish National Library (BNE): 700 years between hell and paradise

Exhibition - Literature
Madrid

The Spanish National Library is exhibiting ten manuscripts from Dante’s greatest work: TheDivine Comedy, to mark the seventh centenary of his death.

The work, which dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries, documents the most widely read and best known medieval poem. The manuscripts are displayed next to related engravings and incunabula from the Spanish National Library’s collections.

The poetry of The Divine Comedy is a complex text with numerous stylistic references to very different literary and documentary fields. The manuscripts document precisely their need for explanations by including marginalia.
