Dalí. Lithographs from Les songes drolatiques de Pantagruel

Exhibition - Illustration

The Bancaja Foundation in Valencia reveals one of the least-known aspects of the art of Salvador Dalí: illustration.

The artworks on show are a series of 25 lithographs on Japanese paper by Dalí, based on the illustrations of François Desprez for Gargantua and Pantagruel. These eccentric, fantastical figures straddle the line between caricature and farce, highlighting the satirical and bizarre side of Dalí’s work. As well as the grotesque figures, there are also references to the tradition of Carnival and themes such as the seven deadly sins.

The exhibition is complemented by a wide range of documentation, objects, and press cuttings which place these 25 lithographs in the creative universe of the Surrealist master.
