The Fundació Antoni Tàpies celebrates its 30th anniversary with this exhibition on the decade from 1953 to 1963, when the art of Tàpies was reaching maturity with his so-called matter paintings.
The density of textures and the use of grey, ochre and earth tones define the works of Antoni Tàpies in this period. In these years his art began to attract a great deal of attention, with multiple exhibitions and awards. The exhibition gathers numerous pieces from the Foundation’s collection, some from the artist’s family, and others on loan from museums and private collections, on show for the first time. The exhibition is completed by copious documentation, providing context for Tàpies’ work and its effect on the critical culture which opposed the Francoist regime in Spain.
