2328 vellón reales (billon reales). Goya and the origins of the Banco de España collection

Exhibition - Decorative art,Documentation,Painting
Madrid

The exhibition features core pieces from the classic collection of the Banco de España and covers its first 100 years of collecting. It marks the inauguration of the Banco de España exhibition hall at its headquarters in Cibeles, in the heart of Madrid's Paseo del Arte.

A total of 28 paintings, seven pieces of decorative arts, a sculpture, a drawing and 96 documents from the Historical Archive and the Banco de España Library make up this review of the entity's first century of collecting. Of particular note is the gallery of portraits of directors and historical figures linked to the bank (among which are ten Goya portraits), a fascinating collection of clocks and elements of decorative arts such as furniture and silverware, and the exhibition of share certificates, publications and other securities issued by the bank, which includes the first Spanish banknotes.

The name of the exhibition is a reference to the payment made to Goya for his portrait of the first director of the Banco de San Carlos (the entity´s original institution).
