A dark room... and a few minutes later the spectator begins to make out the work. The American artist plays with light and how it is perceived by the human eye.
The work of James Turrell is a constant experimentation with light as a medium and as an artistic object. Turrell states that he uses light “as a material with which to influence or affect the medium, which is perception” and that, “instead of making something about light I wanted it to be light.” Cherry, the exhibition’s installation, is part of the Apertures, series, in which a window resembling a frame has been cut out of the wall separating the two spaces. The viewer needs to remain in the dark room for a few minutes before visualising the monochrome light.
