Flanked by its narrow Moorish alleyway, the Casa de las Cabezas house is not only one of the most iconic corners of Cordoba – it is also a place where history and legend come together; a place that takes us back to the Spain of contrasts where the Mudejar style has been present in courtyards and rooms since the Middle Ages.

As well as its architectural value, this medieval house is full of history and legend, as it was the palace of Almanzor – others say that it belonged to his sister Fátima –, it served as a prison for the unfortunate Gonzalo Gustioz, father of the Seven Princes of Lara, and its rooms were the setting for the most tragic events described in the old Castilian Cantar de Gesta poem. In some of its hideaways, the lord of Salas saw the sectioned heads of his children, presented on a silver tray. Tradition also has it that the heads were displayed in the alley as trophies, each one hanging from an arch, so this narrow path now has seven arches, and is the name by which it is sometimes known.
