The Sorolla Museum presents an exhibition consisting of 227 small-format oil paintings, including several unpublished works. They are small in size, but show Sorolla at his best.
Over the course of his life, Joaquín Sorolla managed to create around 2,000 oil paintings on boards, slats, and other small materials. The painter called them “sketches”, “patches” and “spots of colour”. This was a very common format among the leading artists of the 19th century as it allowed them to collect ideas and impressions of things they had seen in works that were more than simple sketches. This type of work then started to be considered as an example of the artist’s creative freedom, and also as his most personal and original work.Sorolla occasionally used them to practice compositions, but he often used them as an exercise to experiment with artistic influences and ideas. He soon started to frame them and they were frequent and notable at all his exhibitions. The exhibition at the Sorolla Museum displays a total of 227 small-format oil paintings, 44 of which belong to private collections and are almost all unpublished.
