Tourism for enjoying the Navarre countryside

Feeding the sheep, milking the cows, discovering how to harvest the fields… Can you imagine you and your children having these experiences in the heart of the countryside? We recommend the most original forms of agrotourism offered in Navarre. A real breath of fresh air.

The first of these is offered by the Abelore Agrotourism Association of Navarre: a series of country house lodges where, apart from lodging, you can take part in daily arable and livestock farming activities. The owners of the houses provide accommodation and show tourists their daily tasks, encouraging them to take part. You can help to bring a new lamb into the world; whisper to the horses; enjoy a donkey ride with the farm children; take care of roses in the greenhouses; make homemade nougat, aromatic oils, jams and junket; make dry flower wreaths and decorations; take part in the grain harvest, etc.

The second agrotourism initiative (financed by the European Union) is that of the Fundagro-UAGN Association. They have designed three agro-routes or tourist itineraries (some with two routes) through various parts of Navarre, where you will find accommodation, restaurants, direct sale businesses (of food and homemade products) and activities linked with arable and livestock farming. There is no set time for completing these routes, which you can organise as you wish, but we recommend you set aside various days to complete one of them, as their length ranges from 39 to 110 kilometres. Remember that you have to use your own vehicle.

At the country house lodges and tourist apartments forming part of this offer you can gather olives to make oil, peal pepper, attend at the birth of a calf, gather honey, go for a tractor ride, prepare a fried breadcrumbs dish, make your own wine, etc. At the restaurants you will find menus using products from their own vegetable gardens. Activities to complement these routes include visits to museums, cookery courses, hot-air balloon rides, visits and tastings at wine cellars, cider makers, cheese dairies and canning factories, mushroom gathering, etc. Do not miss the chance to buy a craft-made souvenir from one of the many businesses in the area.

Thanks to these initiatives you will get to know towns and cities of great cultural interest, like Pamplona, Aibar, Sangüesa, Javier, Estella-Lizarra, Puente La Reina, Muruzábal, Tudela, Olite, Roncesvalles, etc. and such surprising nature spaces as the Irati Forest.
Learn about the lifestyle, customs and culture of the Navarre countryside and teach your children the values of this country work. Remember that you are recommended to make prior arrangements in many of the establishments. You will find more information at the following official websites: http://www.agroturismosnavarra.com/
