A destination with a seafaring tradition for the whole family to enjoy? Long beaches of fine sand and secluded coves looking out over the Mediterranean? The Costa Dorada in Tarragona offers all this, plus remnants of the Roman Empire, the birthplace of Gaudí, golf, water sports…
It covers a large area of Tarragona (south of Catalonia) and has 92 kilometres of coastline which are particularly attractive for family tourism. Destinations like Salou, Cambrils and Calafell are just a few good examples, and in fact Salou is home to the exciting PortAventura theme park.
Roman culture and an inspiration for artists
The ancient Roman Tarraco still endures in today's Tarragona, with its monuments awarded the World Heritage designation by the UNESCO. The Costa Dorada is also the birthplace of the genius Antoni Gaudí, and Reus –the city where he was born– is a chance to learn all about him. Picasso, Miró and Casals are some of the artists with close links to this area, and who drew such inspiration from it.
The contrast between the landscapes of the coast and the interior offers numerous options for enjoying nature, including hiking, mountain bike, horse riding and 4x4 routes, plus water activities and golf beside the Mediterranean.
If you're after a family destination, we can highly recommend a visit to the Costa Dorada and the chance to enjoy its multiple attractions. Check our map of tourist destinations.
