Peñaranda de Bracamonte

Peñaranda de Bracamonte is close to the city of Salamanca, just 40 kilometres away. It stands out because of its three arcaded squares with genuine Castilian architecture. Its old town has been declared Property of Cultural Interest.

The three squares, which are interconnected, have similar architecture: arcades on the ground floor; one or two upper floors to live in, made of brickwork, with geometrical motifs decorating the façade and the balconies. The Plaza de Agustín Martínez Soler is the square that preserves the most rural look because it is the oldest. One of the highlights is the Church of San Miguel, a Renaissance church. In the 16th century the Plaza de la Constitución was built to extend the market. The Town Hall is there, which was built in 1647. The other square is Plaza de España, with the old prison and the bandstand. This square is the one with the most regular shape. Another place that should not be missed is the Convent of the Carmelitas Dezcalzas, a Baroque building with a museum that holds a valuable collection of Italian art. The best day to visit is Thursday, when the weekly market takes place. It goes back to the 14th century, when it was granted a royal privilege. For lunch visitors must try Peñaranda de Bracamonte’s most popular dish: roast suckling pig.
