It was created during the reign of Philip II of Spain, and was originally located in the Casa de la Panadería. In 1774 it moved to its current location in the Calle Alcalá, in the Goyeneche Palace designed by Churriguera. The façade was modified by Juan de Villanueva. It is currently home to the San Fernando Museum of Fine Arts, with works by Juan de Juanes, Ribera, Zurbarán, Murillo, Velázquez and Goya, amongst others.
