Hiking in Majorca
Sport, countryside and adventure for all the family... an excellent combination in an exceptional destination: Majorca, the largest of the Balearics. Sounds good, don't you think? Here you will find the key to enjoying the island itself, and sports like hiking and cycling. The tracks and trails of Majorca will take you to inland villages, the Sierra de Tramuntana Mountains and some of the most beautiful coves anywhere in the Mediterranean. Come and discover these alternative routes to the roads: a different way to explore the island.
Each year, more and more people explore Majorca practising their favourite sports: hiking and cycle touring. Why? Two reasons are the island's excellent year-round climate and its incredible variety of landscapes. So don't think twice and get moving. There are many marked trails running to villages, beaches and coves, to the inland plains and even to the region's highest mountains. There are itineraries to suit all tastes, with different levels of difficulty. They can be done by everyone from children to seniors, both on foot or by bike. In general, they are comfortable, fairly flat routes, although there are some which are much more demanding. Choose the one that suits you best and, if you are unsure, head for any of the island's tourist offices, where they will give you detailed information on the different routes, suggesting the most suitable ones and providing leaflets and maps.
Getting around Majorca on two wheels is easy. In many of the ports and towns there are bike hire shops open all year round so you don't have to bring your own bike along with you. More than half the island's 1,250 kilometres of roads are rural tracks and secondary roads with hardly any traffic. There is a network of fully marked cycle-touring routes with information panels located at points of interest on the way. To avoid getting lost, it is a good idea to keep to the main tracks. If you are looking for easy rides, then choose those around Manacor, Inca, Pollença, Llucmajor, Campos and Alcúdia. If you are more of an expert, you can go for routes of up to 200 kilometres, running through stunning countryside such as the Sierra de Tramuntana Mountains, in the northwest of the island, with climbs to beautiful villages like Valldemossa, Sóller and Lluc.
If you prefer hiking to biking, then you are in luck: Majorca is the perfect destination for you. You can go walking gently as a family, and there are also routes which are much more physically demanding. Choose your own limit. Before starting a route you should bear in mind the following recommendations: take water and food, sun cream, suitable clothing and footwear, a small first aid kit and a mobile phone. The Sierra de Tramuntana Mountains is one of the most attractive areas for walking. Here you will find the highest peak on the Balearic Islands, Puig Major (1,445 metres). Don't forget your camera, because over a short distance you will see everything from rugged mountains to the deep blue of the Mediterranean Sea. In these mountains there is a hiking route known as “Piedra en Seco” (dry stone), which is easy and runs west to east, from Andratx to Pollença. The itinerary is divided into eight stages and covers a total of 150 kilometres. Other good options are the Artà-Lluc Route, in the north, which has the GR (long-distance) category, the climb to Ses Ànimes tower in Banyalbufar or, from Andratx, you can cross the Sa Dragonera Nature Reserve.
