The land of , the typical wine of the Basque country
Landscape in Getaria.
Txacoli is the Basque country's best-known wine. This light, fruity white wine is slightly sparkling and has a tart, refreshing edge. We suggest enjoying it in the setting where the grapes used to make it are grown. You'll be able to visit the wineries and learn all about the production process.
A good way of finding out more about txacoli wine is to visit the main vineyards and wineries producing the three different Designations of Origin. These are awarded to wines from Álava, Getaria and Vizcaya, and in these areas you'll find numerous establishments related to the production of txacoli.
Places to visit in Álava include Artziniega, Ayala, Llodio, Okondo and Amurrio. Amurrio is home to El Txacoli, the oldest winery in the Álava Designation of Origin, which offers guided tours. In the same district you'll find the main winery producing this wine, Arabako Txakolina, where after a tour of the facilities you can sample the txacoli. Other wineries in the area which can also be visited include Okendo Txacolina (Okondo), Beldui Txacolina (Llodio), and Artomaña Txacolina (Artomaña).
The main districts in Vizcaya for the production of txacoli are Orduña and Orozko. Orduña is the site of the winery of Gure Ahaleginak, open to visitors, and where you can also enjoy some of the Basque Country's traditional pintxos. Orozko celebrates its txacoli day at the end of June.
And finally, the main places which produce txacoli with the Getaria Designation of Origin label are Getaria itself, Zarautz and Aia. In Getaria you can visit the wineries of Urki, Ameztoi and Txomin Etxaniz. And Zarautz is home to the winery of Talai Berri. Of course, both here and in many other wineries throughout the region you can buy your txacoli directly on the premises after sampling. Things to remember: In most cases you'll need to reserve your visit to the wineries in advance. You can check all the information on the website of the Aiaraldea Txacoli Route (this includes the Álava and Vizcaya txacoli Designations of Origin), and on the website for the Getaria txacoli Designation of Origin.
