Cuenca, a great place for tapas and nightlife

Here we show you the best places for going out for tapas and for nightlife in the city of Cuenca in the north-east of the region of Castile-La Mancha. Another two attractive ways to enjoy this World Heritage City.

Out for tapas
The city has three main areas for tapas. For example, in the historic quarter, the best places are the area around the cathedral and the Plaza Mayor square, as well as the El Castillo quarter where there are numerous terraces with views over the surroundings. Another place –particularly popular with young people– is the pedestrian street of San Francisco. Finally, in the new part of the city, head for the Calle Colón, the area around the railway station and República Argentina avenue.

When you order your tapas, we recommend typical recipes from Cuenca such as morteruelo (a type of hot game pâté), ajoarriero (cod and garlic), zarajos (grilled lamb's innards) and the stewed courgette and tomato dish known as pisto manchego.

Nightlife
A good idea is to spend the early hours of the evening in the old quarter, with its relaxed and tranquil atmosphere. You could begin with the pleasant dinner followed by a dance in one of the music venues, which play mostly pop music. Then, or if you prefer more up-to-date music, make for of the hippest areas – known as 'La Calle' ('The Street')– in the area around Calle Doctor Galíndez. Finally, a more unconventional vibe can be found around the railway station.
