Mining heritage in the Region of Madrid

Surrounded by an amazing natural environment on the Sierra de Guadarrama, this ancient silver mine is an authentic underground gem, a rare trace of historical eras.

It was one of the most important metal mines on the entire Sierra de Guadarrama. There, silver was mined and there were also several foundries, both at the mine pithead and in the town itself. In the latter, ingots of the precious metal were mined in the 17th and 18th centuries. The chronicles even mention some gold findings. The Bustarviejo silver mine is a vestige of an era in which, with huge amounts of ingenuity, businesses were undertaken that are considered to be risky today. The mine exploded towards the end of the 19th century, but a good part of the vestige of the subterranean works of the 17th and 18th centuries was conserved. The Torre del Indiano stands out among these, built in the 17th century and declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1983, it is a true identifying sign of the exterior of this mine. Outside the mine, there are informative panels that explain each of the elements that make up the mining and industrial complex.

Praktisk information

For now, the only part of the mine that can be visited is the part from which you can see, aside from the remains of mining activity, which are well-marked and explained, a unique view of the Valle Hermoso de Bustarviejo (Beautiful Valley of Bustarviejo).
